Working with families with children up to age 18 years at times of stress or crisis
Children First Derby is a local registered charity working to make a positive impact on the community it serves.
It seeks to achieve this through the provision of high quality services to improve the quality of family life
by offering support to parents and their children.
We run a Befriending Service for parents in need of support. Our trained volunteers visit their
families on a regular basis. They offer emotional support and will also accompany their clients to
appointments that the client finds daunting. The nature of befriending varies according to the needs
of the client. Referrals are mainly from health care workers and social workers, although parents
who feel in need can ask for a befriender.
Many of the families that we work with feel isolated and do not have a network of friends or
relatives to support them. To help with this we arrange family social events and outings.
Our Befriending Service could not operate without the support of its Volunteers.
If you are interested in becoming a Children First Volunteer, please phone us to arrange an informal meeting.
In partnership with Derby City Children and Young People's Services we run a supervised
contact service for children in long term public care. This enables the children to meet with
their birth families and carers in a family friendly environment. Those who run the service are
committed to providing meaningful and enjoyable contact sessions.
We also provide a signposting service for those concerned about children or family issues
and who are unsure of who to contact for appropriate support.
Monies have to be found from donations, grants and general fundraising events to provide:
- toys and equipment for our family centre
- social events and outings
- the ongoing development of the Charity's work in Derby
