Our Children First Derby Drama Group, which forms an active part of our Mentoring Service, has been working hard on their latest play, Behind the Mask, depicting the effects Covid-19 has had on young people and their families.

Due to covid restrictions and social distancing rules, it was decided to film this year’s performance, to ensure the final production could be viewed safely by the drama group’s friends and family. And we would like to say a huge Thank You to everyone at the Derby QUAD and who kindly offered their help and expertise to support this initiative.

After finalising the screenplay, written by the Children First Derby Drama Assistant, Saphrine Davidson, and after months of rehearsing, the excited Drama Group were invited to the QUAD and given the opportunity to film the play in the QUAD’s Digital Studio.

On completion, the QUAD then went on to host a special screening of Behind The Mask, for the Drama Group to watch, alongside their friends and families, which was a huge success and enjoyed greatly by all.

Drama Group Parent:

I am so proud of them all, it was such a good show and definitely shows me Jayden’s confidence is growing.

Children First Derby Mentor:

I thoroughly enjoyed the film today. I thought the young people involved did really, really well. They got their message across in a meaningful and positive way and it was great to see their confidence.

It was great also to see my mentee taking part and playing several different characters.  She says that she really enjoyed taking part and is pleased that she did. She says that it has helped with her own self confidence.

Well done to all involved.

The families were also invited to attend a special Animation Family Activity afterwards in the Digital Studio, where they were able to enjoy creating their own short animations.

We are very grateful to everyone to who has offered their help and support throughout this initiative and we would like to say a special thank you to Sam Jordan, Quad Derby Projectionist/technician, Chris Bevan, Kids QUAD Film Workshop Leader and Abbie Canning, QClub Programme Curator, for your help, expertise and support throughout.

We’d also like to thank Children First Derby Mentor, Sally Faulks, who made all the amazing costumes and Children First Derby Drama Assistant Saphrine Davidson for her fantastic contribution and scriptwriting skills.
